Biography

Sawyer K. Kemp (they/them) was the inaugural 2020-2022 Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Associate in Transgender Studies. Their areas of research include contemporary performance, Shakespearean & early modern drama, and the role of “accessibility” in nonprofit arts industry. Their first article, co-authored with mentor Gina Bloom for Shakespeare Quarterly, discussed their work developing a motion capture Shakespeare video game, and their work on transgender representation has appeared in Shakespeare Studies, The Journal for Early Modern Cultural Studies, and in the edited collection Teaching Social Justice Through Shakespeare. 

Sawyer Kemp's current research project uses a transhistorical approach to imagine how contemporary social justice issues like homelessness, state violence, and dysphoria could inform and situate historical investigations of early and premodern gender nonconforming figures. They are presently an Assistant Professor in English at Queen's College, City University of New York.

Biography

Ava L.J. Kim is the 2022-2023 Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Associate in Transgender Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. In July of 2023, she will begin an appointment as Assistant Professor of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at the University of California, Davis. Ava completed her PhD in English at the University of Pennsylvania and her BA in Creative Writing at Macalester College. Her work can be found in the journal, American Studies, and is forthcoming in TSQ.

Biography

Emi Frerichs, Ph.D. (they/them) is the 2023-2025 Chancellor's Postdoctoral Research Associate in Transgender Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. As a specialist of the Global South, Frerichs re-examines trans/travesti/non-binary gender identity and non-normative sexualities by focusing on their radical revision in Latin American literature, history, and culture. While drawing on the cultural and linguistic expertise forged through their field work as a Ph.D. in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, their research necessarily draws from as it also contributes to the transdisciplinary work of Latin American Studies, Trans*/Travesti Studies and Gender, Women, and Sexuality Studies.

They are currently working on their first book, Irreverent Revelations: Travesti Aesthetics and Intimacies in Southern Cone Literature and Culture, which examines travesti authorship, artistry, and representation within the literary and cultural production of late 20th-and 21st-century Argentina and Chile. Focusing on the counter-formations of Latin American travesti and trans identities articulated by literary and activist interventions into the constraints of el género—gender and genre—Frerichs offers an analysis of how each author and artist not only offers bold renditions of thriving representation that recuperates travesti’s subversive history, but also generates an analysis of the literary and aesthetic modes for decolonizing the conscripts of gender through a politics of refusing translation.  Their future work will amplify these conversations at the intersections of Latin American Studies and Trans/Travesti Studies through a comparative project on the life-writing strategies and narratives of transmasculine identities, activisms, and subjecthood within contemporary Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. Frerichs’ writing has appeared in journals such as Chasqui: Revista de Literatura Latinoamericana and Hispanófila and is forthcoming in Transgender Studies Quarterly. Their work will also appear in the edited book volume entitled Rhetorics of Care for the Peeters Publishers Leuven Ethics of Care Series.

As a lifelong activist in the LGBTQ+ community, Frerichs received the Iowa Friends of Civil Rights Award in 2005 and the Matthew Shepard Scholarship from 2006-2010 in recognition of their early advocacy in the queer and trans community. As a transmasculine-identified scholar, instructor, and activist, they extend this enduring commitment to institutional advocacy through their research on Transgender Studies, LGBTQ+ Studies, and Latin American Studies, which has been awarded support through UW-Madison Tinker Nave Grant in 2018 and the GLBT Alumni Council of the Wisconsin Alumni Association Research Award in 2019.

Biography

I am an alumna of this University, earning my first Bachelor’s degree in Political Science with a minor in Latino Studies.  I earned a second Bachelor’s degree in Spanish from Northeastern Illinois University.  Then, I earned my Masters of Education in Higher Education from Loyola University Chicago.  Some of my academic interests include social justice, Latino studies, education, and gender studies.

I hope to get to know my students and their future aspirations.  I relish the opportunity to be among you as an advisor at an institution that served as a catalyst for my own success.  I look forward to facilitating your academic careers and your future plans.

Biography

Robin grew up in Newport News, Virginia. She completed a Bachelor's Degree in French and Spanish at George Mason University in Fairfax and her Master's in Applied French Linguistics at the University of Alabama. She is working towards a Ph.D. in French Linguistics  at UIUC where she designs, coordinates, and teaches interdisciplinary classes on French, culture studies, linguistics, queer studies, communication, and feminist studies. Along with a concentration in Romance Linguistics, Robin has also completed additional graduate minors in Queer Studies, Gender and Women's Studies, European Union Studies, and Linguistic Anthropology.  

In Summer 2024, Robin conducted research in collaboration with the Institute for Gender, Sexuality and Feminist Studies (IGSF) at McGill University and the Just Feminist Tech and Scholarship Lab under the supervision of Dr. Alex Ketchum. This work was funded by the Graduate Student Scholarship granted by the International Council for Canadian Studies/Conseil international d'études canadiennes.   She has recently joined the working group Jeunes chercheur·euses en Genre & Langage and is a Researcher-Member of the Quebec English-Speaking Communities Research Network at Concordia University.

Research Description

Robin's dissertation, "Stigmatized trailblazers to celebrated deviants: Heteronormative discourses of (homo)sexuality in Montréal after the Québec Quiet Revolution, 1969-1977", investigates divisive narratives in French and English news media published in Tiohtià:ke (Montréal) between 1969 and 1977. She builds a transdisciplinary framework to analyze how news narratives about (homo)sexuality were impacted by the interwoven political, economic, and social consequences of the Quiet Revolution. 

She demonstrates that news discourses about (homo)sexuality responded to changing cultural attitudes, language ideologies, identity politics, and community values. These influences depended on a set of larger historical narratives and the political stakes of a sovereign, independent Québec nation. This project gave way to her larger research agenda which bridges the role of language research across traditional disciplinary divides. 

She is grateful for the financial support for her dissertation from the American Council for Quebec Studies, l’Association internationale des études québécoises, and the International Council for Canadian Studies/Conseil internationale des études canadiennes.
