Jessennya Hernandez, Ph.D. student in Sociology and GWS graduate minor, has received the Social Actions Initiative Award from Sociologists for Women in Society (SWS) for her project, “Feed the Block: Political Education and Community Empowerment." Jessennya is co-founder of the grassroots mutual aid collective "Feed the Block," based in Southern California, which has created spaces and networks for BIPOC communities who are facing food and housing precarity and insecurity. This initiative supports expanding the membership and providing more resources to continue the work of the mutual aid collective. During the 2021-22 academic year, Jessennya will be a teaching assistant for "The Politics of Fashion" (GWS 275) and "Sexualities" (GWS 202).
